There is a difference between spending time with God and being in the presence of God.
I can be in the presence of my dad and not actually spend time with him or talk to him.
And so because I am focused on my own thing, I don’t actually hear what he has to say when he speaks to me. I may not even realize that he is speaking to me and miss what he is saying. It is the same thing with God.
You can be in the presence of God but you are not focused on Him or His voice, you are busy with life and the things of life. So when He speaks, you miss it. And if you have never spoken to Him, you will not recognise His voice and think it is someone else. “My sheep hear my voice and they answer me”. In Hebrews, the word hear means to recognise.
The problem with most Christians is that we hear God’s voice but we do not recognise His voice or we doubt He is the one speaking because we haven’t spent time with Him and are not focused on Him.
This is why God tells us that our eyes must be single. Because what you focus on determines who you become. In hearing God’s voice you begin to cultivate the things of God. Until you are at a point where you are the very reflection of Christ.
Being in God’s presence is one thing. Spending time is another. The two are not mutually exclusive.
