As Bukola ran to the toilet, she wondered what she had eaten to make her throw up so badly.
Was it the stew and rice she had gotten from Iya basira this morning or the yam pottage from last night?
She had been throwing up uncontrollably for the past one week, and she did not know why.
Surely, her village people had not found a way to destroy her!
As dramatic as she was, that is how she felt right now, at this moment.
Eba mi oooo, she thought as she found her way back to her seat.
As head of the Buisiness Intelligence department in a huge fashion company in Lagos, she could not afford to be sick. She was the best in the business, and her team needed her.
Sickness was something she could not afford right now. On Saturday she will go to the hospital to find out what was wrong. Hopeful it was just food poisoning and nothing else.
Until then, she will have to hold the fort of her stomache as it was only Thursday afternoon, and Saturday was 2 days away.
The Unexpected News
Bukola spent the rest of the day fighting off nausea, sipping on ginger tea, and trying to focus on the reports in front of her. But by the time she got home that night, she felt exhausted. Her stomach was still in knots, and her head was pounding.
“Saturday can’t come fast enough,” she muttered to herself as she collapsed on her bed.
When morning came, she somehow felt a little better. Maybe it was just food poisoning. But by lunchtime, the nausea was back, and her body felt strangely… off.
By Saturday, she could barely contain her impatience as she sat in the hospital waiting room. When the nurse finally called her in, she wasted no time explaining her symptoms.
After a few routine checks, the doctor frowned slightly. “We’ll need to run some tests, but first, let’s do a simple one right now.”
“Simple test?” Bukola asked, raising a brow.
“Yes,” the doctor said, handing her a small plastic cup. “A pregnancy test.”
Bukola blinked. Then laughed. Then, frowned. “No way,” she muttered, shaking her head as she took the cup.
She did the test, convinced it was a waste of time. But when the doctor returned with the results, her heart pounded in her chest.
“Congratulations, Miss Bukola,” the doctor said with a smile. “You’re pregnant.”
Bukola’s mouth fell open. Her hands gripped the chair. “Preganant ke? How will I manage this one?.”
“Pregnant? That is not possible!!! she echoed, her voice barely a whisper.
The doctor nodded. “Yes. About eight weeks along. This is based on the pee and blood sample we took for the test to make sure”.
Her mind spun. She had deadlines, projects, and goals! This was not part of the plan—at least, not now. Not with her estranged husband gallivanting the streets of Lagos with his pants down…
“Are you okay?” the doctor asked, noticing her stunned silence.
Bukola inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly. “I just… I didn’t see this coming. kini mofe se?”
“I don’t believe I’m pregnant, let’s do another test” suggested Bukola
“We did two already. The pee test and the blood test. Okay for accuracy sake we can get an ultrasound scan”. reassured the doctor. “Follow me to the sonogram room”.
As she walked to the sonogram room, her hands instinctively rested on her stomach though terrified and in denial that she could be pregnant.
When she got to the room, she proceeded to undress and put on the hospital gown while the doctor waited outside. Once done, and lying on the ultrasonography, she called for the doctor to come in.
Doctor Temi came into the room and proceeded to put gel on Bukola’s belly to see if indeed there was a fetus in there. To her surprise there was not one fetus but three feti.
Dr Temi gasped, catching the attention of Bukola..
“What is it? Is it cancer? Wait… did you realize that the test you did was wrong?”
“It is not cancer! However, I was right about you being pregnant!! You are going to be a mama of triplets, said Dr Temi happily 😊..
” What! How can that be?” Asked the flabagasted Bukola.
“Well, when two peo…
“I know how one gets pregnant don’t insult me. I cannot do this on my own or with that dead beat useless husband of mine, screamed Bukola interrupting Dr Temi.
“Don’t worry everything will be okay. God is in control and you can call me for questions anytime”, reassured Dr Temi.
“Easier said than done!! I know God is in control, but right now I am not!!! Screamed Bukola.
Why would God let it happen now? Asked Bukola with tears in her eyes…
Dr Temi proceeded to reasure Bukola with comforting words that fell on deaf ears…
With a forced smile and wet cheeks, Bukola proceeded to apologise and thank Dr Temi.
It is fine! Being pregnant and having a baby is not easy it changes everything.. I totally understand and you can call me any time for questions. Here is my card. Now let me leave you so you can get dressed, said Dr Temi as she rose up to leave.
The Deadbeat Husband
After Doctor Temi left, Bukola got up to change as she pondered on how she a forty-seven year old woman was going to deal with this pregnancy and how she was going to tell her estranged husband who she had not spoken to in two months and hoped to never speak to again.
The realization hit her in full force as she walked to her car. She was about to embark on the biggest, most unpredictable project of her life. Is this how Sarah felt when she was pregnant at age ninety? She asked herself.
For the first time in a long time, Bukola had no data, no reports, and no strategy to guide her through it. All she had was God and she needed Him now, more than ever…
First thing she had to do before telling anyone in her life was tell Femi.
As she unblocked and dialed Femi’s number, her heart sank. She had loved this man and yet he betrayed her 💔 😢.
The phone rang for twelve seconds before Femi picked up to answer.
“Hello, who is this? Inquired Femi.
” Who is this? Really”, replied Bukola.
“Ah the prodigal wife calls”, responded Femi.
“Prodigal Wife? I am never coming back to you” said Bukola disgustingly.
“It has been 2 months since you kicked me out of the house! What do you want? What is it? It must be soo important for you to take time out of your busy schedule to call me”, spat Femi.
Bukola did not know what plans God had for her, but she knew He was with her. There must be a reason why this man will be back in her life forever. Definitely not through marriage, even though they were only separated and not yet divorced.
“Well…… stammered Bukola.
