Read Time:3 Minute, 22 Second

The worst form the devil can appear to you in is that of an angel.
So when God reveals that the angel is, in fact, the devil, it becomes hard to believe. You are conflicted. You ask God, “Why?” You plead with Him, and maybe—just for a second, or maybe a minute—you even begin to doubt Him.

You say to yourself, “No, Lord, You don’t know the devil like I do.”

But He absolutely does.
He knew the devil before the devil ever met you.
He knew the devil before he was formed.

So why would He lead you astray now? Why would you even think that?

In this case, the devil is obviously a metaphor. It could be a friend, a potential spouse, a family member, a colleague, or even a neighbour.

The only person truly looking out for you is God.
No one else.
Not even yourself—because we get conflicted by people’s performances, by their make-believe characters and our own assumptions.

We are flawed—because we are human.
We lie to ourselves to believe a narrative that was never true to begin with.
And then we get upset when the truth comes out, realizing we only have ourselves to blame.

This is why it is vital, as a Christian, not only to have an intimate relationship with Christ, but to recognize His voice and the different ways He speaks to us.

God speaks.
He is always speaking.

The real question is:
Are you constantly tuned in?
Have you identified the ways He communicates with you?

It is one thing to be able to hear God’s voice. It is another to be able to identify when it is God communicating to you. Just like when your mum calls your name and you know it is mum because you have known your mum’s voice from birth.

He speaks in many ways, and sometimes, to one person in more than one way.

For me, God speaks in the following ways:

  1. His Voice – When God speaks audibly to me, it’s to instruct me and educate/teach me. He can take me through a Bible passage for two hours to get me to understand the deeper meaning of it.
I remember once questioning whether the voice I heard was truly His. His response?
“The same voice that spoke to Moses in the burning bush is the same voice that speaks to you now.”
From that moment, I never doubted again.
  2. Dreams – When God speaks to me through dreams, it’s usually to reveal something or someone—to warn or prepare me.
One key thing is knowing whether you dream directly or indirectly. Once you know this, interpreting becomes clearer.
I dream directly and have learned to decode symbols. For example, a house represents life; a car, ministry or the direction your life is taking, and so on.
  3. Visions – These were especially strong for me while growing up. God would show me the future in vivid detail—down to what would happen each day from Monday to Sunday.
It felt like living in a constant state of déjà vu because I always knew what was going to happen.
When I asked Him about someone else, He would show me precisely what would unfold in their lives too.
I rarely receive visions now. God usually uses dreams to show me present situations or something futuristic. Maybe because I thought I was going mad at some point, He decided visions were not my thing.

The point is this:
As Christians, we must know how God speaks to us and be able to recognize when it is truly Him speaking.

He is interested in us and wants to be deeply intimate with us.
He is invested in us.
And when He speaks best believe Him.

Because If you don’t, you’ll only have yourself to blame.
I know I did, when I tried to rewrite the narrative of what God had clearly shown me—simply because I couldn’t believe it or didn’t want to.

10 thoughts on “The Different Ways God Speaks

  1. So true and thought provoking as always. We must always be cautious not to let our desires affect our hearing which gives the enemy an opportunity to mimick Gods voice

  2. A good reminder that intimacy with God births a deeper relationship where we can hear Him more clearly. Good piece!
